The Inauguration of the New Acropolis Museum - 761 Words

The New Acropolis Museum was inaugurated in the year 2009, near the base of the Acropolis with a view of the Parthenon. The museum was a facility of around 226,000 square feet of glass and concrete, which cost $200 million dollars. The design was introduced in 2001, so it could be completed in time for the Olympics in 2004. This goal was unsuccessful due to legal battles that delayed the construction process for years said The New York Times. Since the museum opened it is running strong with an average of 5 million visitors per year, coming to see all the different collections. The museum is broken into three floors, offering different historical artwork. The first floor is divided into two sections, one from the archaic period and the other from Propylaia with objects that date around the classical time period to antiquity. On the first floor the visitors are greeted by magnificent sculptures of the first temples on the Acropolis. Displayed here also are votive offerings from wors hippers. Some of these offerings include the archaic Korai, the Hippeis, statues of Athena the goddess, Sculptures of male figures, marble reliefs, and smaller bronze and clay offerings. The Acropolis Museum wants to conduct research on this small collection of archaic statues, which keep their color. He was hardly a religious man during his earlier life, and that is putting it nicely since Malcolm X actually confessed to having ‘very little respect for most people who represented religion’ (Harvey, p5). But when Malcolm X converted to Islam, he adopted the name El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz and he became more active in not just religious preaching but as well as political sermons that advocated human and equal rights and consistently encouraged fellow African Americans to not be intimidated by actions of hate from white people. Sadly, religion, the institution that empowered him, is also rumored to be the one responsible for his death also, mainly because of Malcolm X’s leaning too much towards radicalism and his actions and words that nurture the atmosphere of civil disobedience and activism. One of the areas wherein civil rights, equality and the absence of racism manages to display its self is in the selection of the icons and personalities that have adorned and will be featured in the postal stamps used in the United States for US mail. Civil and equal rights proponents will be glad to know that the US stamps accommodate notable African American icons – as a matter of fact, there are already some popular and iconic African American personalities that have made their way towards immortality via their presence in US stamps, and these personalities include Malcolm X as well as contemporary and fellow civil rights advocate Martin Luther King Jr., Booker T. Washington ( who is the first African American that was featured in a US postal stamp), Sojourner Truth, Harriet Tubman (the first African American woman who appeared in the U.S. postal stamp), Jackie Robinson, Scott Joplin and most recently, Thurgood Marshall. One of the noticeable characteristics among the African Americans who were selected to be featured in the postal stamps aside from Malcolm X is that they are not inclined to senseless and overt acts of violence and the outright disregard for laws and rules. King was contrasted with Malcolm X during their time because he was generally a pacifist, and Washington was known for using education as his main thrust to empower his fellow African American. As for Marshall, he was a civil rights advocate like Malcolm X during his time, but Marshall did not break or went around the law to have his way – he affected social change through the dispensing of morally correct and unbiased justice through the halls of the Supreme Court Justice. He assimilated himself with the system and made positive contribution towards his advocacy not by the distortion of the system but by helping create a just society bereft of crime. Thurgood was an icon because he believed that ultimately, the never ending social struggle is free from the color of one’s skin and ethnicity, like the pursuit of fair and consistent justice by all. This particular characteristic – the ability to win an advocacy without the use of violation and without sowing more seeds of hatred among people of different races, the removal of violence as a means to achieve the victory of an advocacy, to effect social change in a positive manner – is an important characteristic and a significant consideration that the US post office makes every time they select a new icon from the civil rights movement group the act of immortalizing a person via a postal stamp design is a way of supporting everything that the person stands for and represent, and no modern day social institution will deify a person who is synonymous to violence, social disorder and criminal acts. Yes, it is true that not everyone can be saints, but if persons like Mother Theresa and Mahatma Gandhi can live a life without the use of violence, then why should the US postal service consider the criteria of moral soundness be overly high in their selection of the next new face in the US postal stamp? Yes, there are those who achieved their goals by the use of violence and force, like generals who won important wars and ruthless rulers who helped civilized nations and societies – but for those that can be achieved without violence, why would the best man (or woman) in that category be that which utilized violence and showed disregard and disrespect for the law? What message would it send to the public – whose taxes are making sure that federal offices like the US Postal Services operate so that they serve the best interest of the majority, and not the petty qualms of the few whose idolatry towards Malcolm X failed to comprehend the fact that Malcolm X and his acts of violence made him no better than the person and the institution he fought during his lifetime and aimed at changing. Conclusion – Malcolm X was an inspiration to many, mainly because he represents the rebel that every one wanted to become even just for once in their lives, against one act or experience that created the feeling of indignation. And while there are those who staunchly believes that he was instrumental in how the civil rights movement shaped in America during the late 1950’s and before he died halfway the following decade, the position of this paper in this particular issue is that Malcolm X’s violent and law-breaking past have placed him many points below in ranking along with other civil rights advocates – living or dead – in the US history who deserves to be honored with his/her own version of the US postal stamp. Rainforest Depletion Long ago, the Earth had a green belt of rain forests around its middle that covered almost twelve percent of the earth's land surface. (Miller & Berry 3) Today, the rain forest covers two percent of the earth's land surface and it is declining rapidly. The following will be a description of the rain forest, factors in its destruction, and if there are any answers to slow or halt the process. "Today, as we enter the last decade of the twentieth century, we have reached a turning point; we can no longer use the excuse of ignorance." (Hammond 2) People need to try harder to stop rain forest depletion. There are two major areas on earth where rain forests are located. One of these areas is called "The Old World Tropics," which includes Africa and Asia. In Africa, the rain forests are primarily located around the Zaire river. The other area in which rain forests are located is called "The New World Tropics," which contains Central and South America. The New World tropics are in lower altitudes as opposed to the Old World tropics, which are at higher altitudes. Rain forests are located around the equator. This location of the rain forests makes them warm and humid all year round. There are never cold winters in the rain forests. During winter in the rain forests, people comfortably are able to wear T-shirts and shorts. The rain forest has a rainy season which usually lasts most of the year. Recently in Borneo's Sarawak rain forest, 24 cavers and scientists are braving the rain forests elements and creatures to save the regions natural riches. The cavers and scientists are trying to find plant and animal life diverse enough to protect it from mining and to declare it a national park. "Whether the government sets aside the area this year, in five years or never depends on what's discovered out there." (Webster 5) This is a case that often occurs in rain forests. Many governments see no reason to protect the rainforest unless there is an important plant or creature that lives in it. In each type of genre there are similar conventions and plots. For example all horror films have a similar plot and are very ironic the way events occur. Halloween: Resurrection is a horror genre but due to the fact it is only certified at 15 signifies it also seems to be more of a thriller and suspense film. Thriller and Suspense Films are types of films known to promote intense excitement, suspense, a high level of anticipation, ultra-heightened expectation, uncertainty, anxiety, and nerve-wracking tension. Thriller and suspense films are virtually synonymous and interchangeable categorizations, with similar characteristics and features. Halloween includes intense excitement and anticipation as the viewer is wondering where Michael Myers is and who is his next victim. There is suspense and tension built up to throughout but it clear does not show any uncertainty or misleading events. From the other Halloween sequels, the viewers already know who the notorious, single killer is. The viewers also know what he looks like and the nature in which he kills his victims. This does not help increase as much excitement as possible because the viewers already know the killer, even before the film begins. If the genre is to be defined strictly, a genuine thriller is a film that rentlessly pursues a single-minded goal to provide thrills and keep the audience cliff-hanging at the edge of their seats as the plot builds towards a climax. The tension usually arises when the main character(s) is placed in a menacing situation or mystery, or an escape or dangerous mission from which escape seems impossible. Life itself is threatened, usually because the principal character is unsuspecting or unknowingly involved in a dangerous or potentially deadly situation. This statement clearly fits in to Halloween, as there is one main female character and around 5 other catalytic characters that also play a big part in the film. They also encounter life threatening events but as with most horror thriller films, everybody else seems o die but the main character, usually female always seems to narrowly escape at the finale of the film. Halloween is a thriller film but contains many conventions from a horror film that are recognisable and often spotted in nearly every horror genre. They are a male killer, mostly female victims and of course cold-blooded murders with the only weapon being a large knife. Characters in thrillers include convicts, criminals, stalkers, assassins, down-on-their-luck losers, innocent victims (often on the run), prison inmates, menaced women, characters with dark pasts, psychotic individuals, terrorists, cops and escaped cons, fugitives, private eyes, drifters, duplicitious individuals, people involved in twisted relationships, world-weary men and women, psycho-fiends, and more. In Halloween there is a criminal, stalker, a psychotic individual and a world-weary man who are all the same person the strange and derived Michael Myers. Also there are innocent victims and cops featured. The story is told quite effectively. It could be argued that the Halloween sequels are declining in popularity and viewers are actually getting quite tired of them. Nothing ever happens differently rather than stabbings. A bit of adventure in one of the sequels would perhaps draw back the viewers and allow them to feel some different emotions. Halloween: Resurrection has tried a little harder to retrieve its viewers very effectively. The filmmaker, Rick Rosenthal has come up with a unique idea. The main characters are placed in Michael Myers house and actually filmed on the internet. There is objects put around the house purposely, which are booby-traps and red herrings, but this adds effect as the people do not know this but they have to define the objects and events which are real and belong to Michael Myers. This builds up suspense for the actual viewers and the internet viewers on the film. It sort of allows the viewers to communicate with the characters in the film as both would be feeling the same emotions and anxiety whist watching the events unfold in the house.

The dimensions of the painting of the coronation of the Empress is 621 Ãâ€" 979 cm (244.5 Ãâ€" 385.4 in), and uses the oil on canvas medium. This paper contextualizes the artwork by David from the political, economic, religious, gender, technology, regional, religious, ethnic, and generational perspectives. Traditionally, Coronation ceremonies were painted and David borrowed heavily from previous coronation painting. The best example was the Coronation of Marie De Medici by Reuben. Having witnessed the Coronation of Emperor Napoleon first-hand, David, inspired by Reuben, borrowed the layout of his painting and had participants pose. Like in previous coronation paintings, the artwork highlights the protagonists in the centre and illuminated with a beam of light.
